COMMON QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many treatments will I need?

Tattoo removal treatments vary depending on many factors. Most clients need a minimum of 3 treatments for fading, while others may need up to 10 or more for complete removal. We consider the age and size of your tattoo, individual health, type of tattoo ink used, ink density, ink depth, skin type, and other factors.

A waiting period of 6 to 8 weeks is necessary between each laser session to give your immune system enough time to heal between treatments and flush out the shattered ink particles.

Why do I need to wait to 6-8 weeks between treatments?

The longer you wait between treatments, the better, really. As ink particles are flushed naturally through the body’s lymphatic system, treating a tattoo earlier than the advised time does not speed-up the process of laser tattoo removal. In addition to this, you are more at risk of scarring if you repeatedly have laser treatments while your skin’s surface is still healing.

How long does the laser treatment take?

Treatments are super quick, most treatments last anywhere between a few seconds for a small tattoo and only a few minutes for a large tattoo. Over in a flash!

What other considerations affect removal times?

The removal speed depends on specific conditions related to the client and their tattoo.

Using some of the factors taken into consideration from the Kirby-Desai scale, a commonly used tool for determining the number of treatments a tattoo will need for complete removal, Nu Skyn can provide an estimate of the number of treatments required to remove specific tattoos. The Kirby-Desai scale accounts for several of the factors that affect the rate of removal:

  • Fitzpatrick skin type
  • Tattoo layering (if the tattoo is a cover-up)
  • Location on the body
  • Ink colors
  • Amount of ink (vividness of tattoo, if a professional tattoo artist or amateur applied it)
  • Pre-existing scarring

Clients in good physical shape and with a healthy immune system often see faster results than those with health problems or weaker immune systems. Therefore, we encourage clients to exercise, drink ample water, and massage around the treated area (once healed) to get the best results.

Will I scar as a result of laser removal?

Scarring is very rare with tattoo removal. Thanks to our advanced laser system, we’re are able to target tattoo ink particles with the least amount of skin interaction possible. Often there can be scarring of the skin from when the tattoo was done, which, in this case, will stay present once the ink has been removed.

How much does laser tattoo removal cost?

Nu Skyn determines the price per treatment based on the tattoo's size. Virtually all tattoos require multiple treatments to target the varying layers of ink in a tattoo. We also provide treatment packages and discounts to help you save and make tattoo removal an affordable option for all. All initial laser tattoo removal consultations are free! Does the laser hurt?

The laser sensation is often described as a rubber band repeatedly snapping against the skin. Not overly pleasant, but it’s over in a flash — sometimes seconds! Overall, the treatment is tolerable and not any worse than getting a tattoo applied. Ask about Nu Skyn's skin-numbing solutions to relieve pain and maximize comfort.

Are there any side effects?

Laser tattoo removal is the safest method for removing unwanted ink. Nu Skyn uses the latest, most advanced laser technology to deliver the best treatments for every skin type. The most common side effects of laser tattoo removal are:

  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Scabs
  • Bruising
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation

These side effects are temporary and will heal over the 6 to 8 weeks following each laser session. Furthermore, these effects are natural reactions to the laser and positive signs that your immune system is removing the ink from your skin.

Can you lighten my tattoo for cover-ups?

Yes! At Nu Skyn, most clients request lightening their tattoos to prepare for a cover-up. Cover-up tattoos can be pretty difficult to cover, especially if they contain a lot of dark black ink. Laser tattoo removal can fade an existing tattoo down, so it's easier for tattoo artists to cover while eliminating restrictions like size and color.

Why lighten a tattoo when you can just get a cover up instead?

Starting with the cleanest canvas possible on your skin doesn’t only benefit you, but also your tattoo artist. Covering up a faded tattoo after laser tattoo removal gives you much more freedom with the design in terms of placement, color, density of ink and size. This ultimately results in a far better quality cover-up tattoo and one in which you will love forever.
